She and her sister hid in the forests of Poland for 4 years, waiting for the war to end. Her two parents, and 4 of her 7 siblings were gunned down by the Nazis on her front yard. She was my Bubbe Chuma. She had an amazing Yiddish accent, and would say things like, "Don't do that--it's danger!" and, "My sheyne yingele, you are my diamond!" She knitted so many hats and booties for premature babies that Mel Lastman wrote her directly to thank her for her contribution to babies. She was the first person to model empathy to me. She insisted I learn to write a cheque and address an envelope properly. She sent me home with cooked noodles in a grocery bag (just, like, a bag of noodles, flopping around, you know?), and... she was genuinely loving. Maternal through and through. She's been elevated to angel like status in our family, and for good reason. Her heart was as big as the moon. I love her and miss her even to this day. I'm sad that she couldn't meet her great grandchildren. I know it would not have been possible to see a woman love children more than she would have loved her great grandchildren. May God bless her in heaven.
