Joel Cohen was my Daddy Bear. He was the best man I’ve ever known. He always encouraged me to do what I wanted, even if he would have preferred me not to. He encouraged me to go abroad after I graduated university, because he knew I wanted to, although I found out from my sister he thought it was too far away for too long. He was extremely intelligent—he taught algebra, geometry, trig, calculus, and statistics in a college for 28 years. He was an amazing photographer, and avid reader and had a witty, dry sense of humour. He died of mucosal melanoma at 85 1/2. I miss him every day.
